Made in Finley: Supplying the Riverina Since Day One
Milcast has been manufacturing precast concrete products in Finley, NSW for decades. Here is why our location in the heart of the Riverina matters to the irrigators and contractors we serve.
There is a reason Milcast has always been based in Finley. Situated at the heart of the Riverina — one of Australia's most productive irrigation regions — Finley puts us within a day's drive of the Murray, Murrumbidgee, and Goulburn-Murray irrigation districts. That proximity is not incidental. It is central to how we operate and why our customers keep coming back.
The Riverina: Australia's Irrigation Heartland
The Riverina covers a vast area of southern New South Wales and northern Victoria, bounded by the Murray River to the south and the Murrumbidgee to the north. It is home to some of Australia's most productive irrigated agriculture — rice, cotton, dairy, horticulture, and mixed farming — all dependent on a vast network of channels, regulators, and on-farm water infrastructure.
The irrigation districts that manage this network — Murray Irrigation, Murrumbidgee Irrigation, and Goulburn-Murray Water — collectively manage thousands of kilometres of channels and tens of thousands of individual structures. Keeping that infrastructure in good repair is a continuous, large-scale undertaking.
Milcast has been part of that undertaking from the beginning. Our products are in the ground across the Riverina — bay outlets, drop boxes, headwalls, rice flumes, pits, and pipes installed over decades of channel maintenance and upgrade programs.
Why Local Manufacturing Matters
Shorter Lead Times
When an irrigation district needs to replace a failed structure during the irrigation season, they cannot wait weeks for product to arrive from interstate. Our Finley location means we can typically supply standard products within days, not weeks.
For large-scale upgrade programs, we work with irrigation districts and contractors to schedule production and delivery to match construction programs. Being local makes that coordination straightforward.
Lower Freight Costs
Precast concrete is heavy. Freight costs are a significant component of the delivered price of any precast product, and they scale with distance. Supplying from Finley to the Riverina irrigation districts means freight distances are short — typically 50 to 300 kilometres — which keeps delivered costs competitive.
For large projects involving hundreds of structures, the freight saving from sourcing locally rather than from a distant supplier can be substantial.
Local Knowledge
The Riverina has specific conditions that affect the design and specification of irrigation infrastructure — the alkaline soils, the high-sulphate groundwater in some areas, the freeze-thaw cycles in winter, the specific channel geometries of the major irrigation districts.
Our team has been working in these conditions for decades. When you call us with a question about the right product for your channel or soil conditions, you are talking to people who know the Riverina from the ground up.
Supporting Regional Industry
Milcast employs local people and buys from local suppliers where possible. When you buy from Milcast, you are supporting jobs and economic activity in Finley and the broader Riverina region. That matters to us, and we know it matters to many of our customers.
A New Chapter Since 2020
Milcast was originally established as the precast concrete manufacturing operation of Murray Irrigation. In 2020, the business was acquired by new ownership and became an independent manufacturer — still based in Finley, still serving the same customers, but with a broader focus and the ability to supply to any customer, not just one irrigation district.
The new ownership has invested in the Finley facility and expanded the product range, while maintaining the quality standards and local knowledge that have always been the foundation of the business.
